The Neighborhood:
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people as the Traditional Owners of the Country on which Nillumbik and Diamond Creek is located. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and future, and extend that respect to all First Nations People.
Diamond Creek, abutting its gently flowing namesake, is literally where town and country meet. The township is 23kms northeast of central Melbourne and north of Eltham.
Here you’ll find a variety of established and up-and-coming restaurants, retailers, supermarkets and professional services bringing much life and energy into the township.
It’s a scenic spot too, evident on the Diamond Creek Trail, a gently undulating cyclist and pedestrian path that meanders through parklands, the creek valley and semi-rural suburbia.
Diamond Creek takes its name from a tributary of the Yarra River on account of crystalline stones observed on the creek bed. Originally called Nillumbik, Diamond Creek was included in the area claimed by John Batman's Port Phillip Association in 1835. The township has a history rich in gold mining and more recently was a thriving area for orchards.
Today, there is plenty of history to explore so make sure to include a visit to Ellis Cottage when in town. Diamond Creek's close proximity to Melbourne makes it a popular choice for people seeking a rural lifestyle with some proximity to the CBD and it is also popular with day-trippers.
Visit Edendale, a seven hectare working farm that sits alongside the Diamond Creek and the bike trail.
Spend some time exploring Edendale and meet the animals. There are chickens, alpacas, goats, cows, sheep and a variety of small native animals that can be viewed in the paddocks and enclosures.
Visit the cafe for a light lunch or coffee on the alfresco dining deck or bring along your own food and a picnic rug and find a piece of lawn to spread out and relax under the shade of a tree.
The Indigenous Plant Nursery is worth a visit with a great range of local plants for sale and staff with great knowledge they are happy to share.
Gallery 7 six 5 is a magical art space located in Watsons Creek in the Nillumbik Shire.
An icon in the area, the Watsons Creek Antique barn has been lovingly transformed into a modern art gallery, blending industrial rustic charm with contemporary design. A perfect setting, Gallery 7 six 5 boasts an alluring wall of glass that looks out to the red-gums, providing a charming, enticing ambience for displaying a wide array of artwork.
Their mission: to expose the extraordinary talent the Artisan Hills has to offer, providing the artists within the Shire of Nillumbik a platform to showcase their work and display their passion.
Less than 40 kilometres from Melbourne, on the well-known semi-rural journey through Eltham or Diamond Creek out to the Yarra Valley, you will locate Gallery 7six5 at 765d Eltham-Yarra Glen Road, Watsons Creek.
Golden Hills was established for love of quality local produce. This lead them to build a venue that brews beer, roasts coffee and has a massive kitchen to suit.
Golden Hills beers are carefully crafted by the onsite expert Steven Matthews - with a goal to make approachable craft beer with a range that has something for everyone.
Executive Chef Travis Ray leads the team in the kitchen to produce wholesome, simple but delicious food in the kitchen breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Experience the feeling of being transported to another time and place as you meander around the stunning buildings and grounds set on 12 acres.
Enjoy exhibitions across five galleries. Discover the stunning sculptures adorning the buildings and gardens. Take in beautiful views while relaxing with a picnic on the lawns.
Montsalvat is a great place for families and friends, the young and young at heart. Many people visit time and again, reminiscing about the festivals, exhibitions, talks, classes, concerts or weddings they have attended here over the years - and which continue to run.
The French provincial and Gothic style buildings at Montsalvat have been home to artists since it was established in the 1930s.
