Matapouri and Poor Knights Spectacular Coastal Views - Aroha Luxury Guest Suite

With spectacular sea views to the Poor Knights, Matapouri Bay and Northland Coast to Cape Brett the Aroha Luxury Suite is the perfect place to stay during your travels along the famous Tutukaka coast. From the bedroom you walk into a spacious lounge which opens onto north facing sun-soaked lawns and native gardens. The perfect romantic getaway where you can enjoy the serenity of the place, have a hot tub with a drink as the sun sets, or relax and watch a movie in front of the gas fire.
The Aroha Luxury Suite adjoins the Bluewater Sanctuary, during your stay you will be the only guests. Your hosts Richard & Jules will make sure your stay is private. We are available for any questions you may have.
The bedroom can accommodate up to 4 guests and has an ensuite bathroom. The lounge has a tilt away bed available for extra guests or for a family. When not in use the bed tilts away into a cabinet. The lounge has large double glazed sliding doors that can be opened like a pavilion to the gardens. A gas fire will keep you warm on chilly nights. Motorised blinds will make it private and warm at a touch of a button.
If you wish to prepare your own meals the kitchen has everything you need. There is a large webber BBQ in the outside covered portico. The portico has an outdoor brazier to toast marshmallows and to snuggle around in the evening.
The hot tub is available for your exclusive use. Bathrobes are provided. In the evenings you can hear the Kiwis calling to each other. Aroha faces north so you can enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets and the ever-changing moods of this special place.
If you require breakfast, we can provide a cooked or continental meal. Please ask when booking. A coffee machine is provided complimentary.

New since November 2023 ee now have a traditional heated rock sauna in the landscaped gardens which is available to guests at an additional cost.

Absolutely Phenomenal
Richard and Jules could not have done more to make our stay phenomenal. Both of us needed an absolute break and we got it in spades. We will be back.One of those few places you really don't want to tell the truth about because you want to keep it to yourselves .

Idyllic Retreat
We enjoyed our stay immensely. The views are unbeatable, the property is quiet, peaceful and beautfully appointed. The small township of Tutukaka is minutes down the hill with some great restaurants, though dinner at home on top of the hill was wonderful also. Julianne and Richard are friendly, helpful and welcoming. Thoroughly recommend.

Magnificent views
If beautiful views and serenity are your vibe, you'll love this property! Located atop a hill overlooking the spectacular coastline, this spacious apartment makes the most of the expansive vistas. Spacious and comfortable, it has been thoughtfully equipped with everything you might need. This meant we were able to eat in a couple of nights, although the drive in to the restaurants of Tutukaka is under 10 minutes (albeit a tad windy at night for those unfamiliar with the area). A beautiful and restful place to stay with friendly and accommodating hosts.

A small piece of paradise
We were looking for a special location for our friends and family get together (UK & NZ) after being unable to travel to meet during lockdown. Aroha lodge could not have been more perfect for our group of 2 adults and a 19 and 17yr old. It rained and rained - but the beautiful setting and the thoughtfulness of our hosts meant a great time by all enjoying open fires, hot tubs, garden games and of course Angie the dog !! It really is a gorgeous home in a stunning place - thank you !

Ideal Spot for a Peaceful Getaway
We absolutely loved our stay at Julianne and Richard's property. A beautiful, peaceful location and a short drive to the many stunning beaches that the Northland coast has to offer. The house itself had everything we needed and was immaculately clean. We couldn't have asked for more. The hosts were extremely accommodating and were available for any questions we had. Staying at Aroha suite was an amazing experience. Julianne and Richard made our weekend really special. We had the best time enjoying home made meals and dining with the stunning view over the ocean, chilling in hot tub under the stars and exploring beautiful surrounding area.

We’re Julianne O’Brien and Richard Somerville. We look forward to welcoming you to our idyllic hideaway. 
It was love at first sight when we discovered Bluewater Sanctuary. It had long been our dream to live close to the ocean and nature and this ticked all the boxes. Every day we have to pinch ourselves to realise that this is ours, and ours to share.
We both contribute in different ways to the day-to-day running of Bluewater Sanctuary. We live adjoining Aroha Apartment.
I run workshops and retreats and Richard looks after and maintains the land and the house. I have worked in hospitality and owned my own cafe. I enjoy cooking healthy local grown produce for my guests on request.
As a team we delight in making guests feel at home here. We are passionate about the area and love sharing tips on things to do and see including the lesser known gems.
Angie is our English Springier Spaniel. She frolics through the property and is often seen springing across the grassy slopes.

A one-kilometre private driveway through pockets of subtropical forest brings you to Bluewater Sanctuary. The main house, high on a hill, overlooks gentle pastureland to the ocean and islands beyond. 
The first thing you’ll notice is the quiet - the silence broken only by the calls of the many birds in our forest that is protected by a Queen Elizabeth II covenant. Keep your eyes open for tui, kererū (wood pigeon), kōtare (kingfisher), pīwakawaka (fantail), and kiwi and ruru (morepork). Watch for the harrier hawks that glide on the airstreams along the ridges.
Laze, read, sunbathe, or practise yoga on the large wooden decks. Stargaze as you soak in the cedar hot tub. Chill or gather with friends in the spacious lounge. Sit outside at night, warmed by the Tree of Life Brazier.
It feels remote here, yet we are handy to everything. Venture outside our gate, and you’re only minutes from Tukutaka, Matapouri, Whale Bay, and several restaurants and cafés. This area is renowned for its nature reserves and outdoor recreation. Consider making us your base for your diving, fishing, walking or golf trip.
