Ilpendam is a picturesque village near Amsterdam and the last stop of the Amsterdam Wedlands. Time really slows down when you’re staying here. Ilpendam originated in the 12th century, when a dam was placed in the river De Ilp. With its 1,845 inhabitants, two churches, small village shop and the café on the village square, it has a rich history. A popular inhabitant was Frans Banninck Cocq, the 17th-century mayor of Amsterdam, lawyer and lord of the castle of Huis Ilpenstein, Lord of Purmerlant and Ilpendam. Most commonly known as the distinguished gentleman in black at the front of the painting 'De Nachtwacht / The Night Watch' by Rembrandt. From Ilpendam, your oasis of peace, you can discover the beautiful Wedland area or visit the bustling surrounding cities. Every 5 minutes the bus goes to Amsterdam, which takes you to the centre in 10 minutes.
