What a View!
We have stayed at other VRBO/HomeAway properties and have enjoyed them all. But honestly, this was the best—especially the view at night.
The loft itself is attractively furnished and located right across the street from a bus stop served by three routes. When we travel we like to stay in downtown urban areas with convenient public transportation and drive only for things like grocery shopping, visiting outlying areas, and carrying golf clubs, of course. San Antonio's VIA public transit system has very reasonably priced monthly passes and seniors, which we are, get an additional 50% off at $19.00 per person, per month. San Antonio may have a small-town feel, but it is still a large city, and parking—when you can find it—will quickly add up to many times the cost of a monthly bus pass.
The San Antonio Riverwalk area in the heart of downtown is filled with nice restaurants. At one point it is only about a block from Alamo Plaza, the site of the famous battle during the Texas revolution. We walked there a couple of times, but found that walking round trip was a bit much, so we generally took a bus, at least one direction.
If there is anything that approaches Mexican food in San Antonio, it would be the numerous, reasonably priced, golf courses in the surrounding areas. There are plenty of other things to do in the nearby Texas Hill Country, but I will limit my commentary to golf, food, and drink. Some people may be surprised to learn that central Texas is home to a good many German settlers, and I was expecting to find more German restaurants in San Antonio. If you like good German food the towns out in the Hill Country are the places to visit. Fredericksburg is my favorite.
Jon Allman, the owner of the loft, was especially helpful in resolving a couple of very minor repair issues. He brought out a portable AC unit on Sunday when we had a problem with the loft's thermostat to tide us over until he could get the maintenance person in to fix it later; even though it was still quite comfortable without it with the windows open. We never met Jon's wife, Tara, but the afternoon we arrived there was a split of champagne in the refrigerator with a very nice welcome note from her.
