6/10 – Okay

This apartment, on the third floor of a four-story building, is in a great location, at the end of dead-end street in a very quiet neighborhood. It was within easy walking distance of everything we needed - boulangerie, supermarket, a tram interchange, and the historic center of Tours. While the neighborhood is quiet, the apartment itself is pretty noisy. You hear the dog upstairs, the guitar-playing Dylanesque singer next door, and the neighbors’ conversations (and smell their cooking). It is, however, quiet at night. The bedding is very firm and we appreciated the very warm comforter. In contrast, the living room furniture is very soft. We were there in November and the apartment was uncomfortably cold when kept at the requested temperature. Even wearing two sweaters, long johns, and a fleece throw couldn’t keep us warm. (This might have been exacerbated by the apartment below being under renovation and probably unheated. The apartment we’re in now is set at a lower temp and is quite comfortable.)The kitchen is well-equipped. We especially appreciated that the owner cleared space for our groceries (and left us a baguette and bottle of wine). It was not, however, very clean. A lot of the silverware and pots/pans were dirty. One counter was sticky. The stone cutting board had apparently never been picked up for washing; the underside smelled incredibly foul. Neither bleach nor Ajax fixed it - a three-week stay outside finally did the trick.
