Tom

We will be back!
Such an incredible stay, it’s hard to know where to start. Tom and everyone living at the property are so kind and attentive. Our stay felt like coming home to family. We rented a side-by-side from Tom and had the best day, we even took our dog out! Highly recommend staying/adventuring here, I miss it already.

Off the grid and perfect.
A truly unique experience. Plus the rooms are cleaner and quieter than most hotels! We woke up to Bald Eagles and played disc golf all day. The whole family loved it.

Best getaway with the best crew!
I booked a weekend getaway for myself and this was the perfect spot! There's a lot to choose from, sit on the porch, hike, explore, socialize....or not! The room was great, with a comfortable bed. Just the right amount of rustic charm and the staff are exceptional. I'll be back!

Amazing location and hospitality
Can’t imagine there’s a better way to experience Moab. Unbelievable views and everything you would want from an adventuring standpoint. Great hikes, kayaking, etc. Base camp is a perfect spot for anyone trying to get away from the tourist noise and hubbub. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a spot to get away for a bit. Great hospitality as well and really comfortable accommodations. Can’t say enough great things about base camp!

For a midwesterner, this was a unique experience
Communications with and directions from Tom were great. Yes, the drive in was "interesting" (we drove a stock 4Runner), but we had no problems. Spent two nights, took several hikes and enjoyed the great views. Felt very welcome using the kitchen, porch, etc. Thanks!!

This stay is an experience
This city boy is not used to driving on a rocky jeep trail so it's a get there and stay place. However, it's made for just that. Hike the trails and mountains for the camp, gazing at stars on a very dark night, and chill with others there

So much to see!
We really enjoyed out stay at Base Camp. We were a bit surprised to see so many people camping around the lodge (Disc Golf Tournament) but everyone was very respectful and friendly. The room we had was adequate for us - a queen bed with its own bathroom. Tom was very gracious in pointing out things to see in the area and gave us a great hike to do right from the lodge. We used the UTV's to see some outlaying areas like the Wind Caves and Jacksons Hole and overall had a great time. The river is a short walk and he has kayaks available. Of course Koebe the Tortoise was AWESOME!!! We would stay again.

Awesome getaway for adventuring
If you want to experience the views and trails of Moab without having to camp out, Tom’s place is a great option. The location is very remote but has so much around it to explore. The room we stayed in is sufficient for two and we spent a lot of time relaxing on the back porch enjoying the view of the Colorado River and the surrounding canyons. At night you can see the Milky Way. Tom is always around to offer wisdom of the area and suggestions. You should really do some research about “Hurrah Pass” before booking your stay here. This is the road/trail that you take to get from Moab to Basecamp. The road itself offers extraordinary views of the area but it is an Off-Road trail. I would recommend a 4x4; but as long as you have a high clearance vehicle you can -technically-navigate the trail (if you dare try this in anything else, you will damage your vehicle). You would be doing yourself a disservice if you rent/bring a 2WD small SUV in town and attempt to come out to Basecamp. Once you’re out there, you wouldn’t be able to do much exploring on the other trails the area has to offer. Get a Jeep in town so you can explore “Chicken Corners”. This is a great off-road trail that starts at Basecamp and follows the Colorado River south, with Wind Caves you can explore along the way. As long as you come prepared, I highly recommend the Basecamp for unforgettable adventures and memories.

Great views if you have a lifted vehicle and if you don’t mind comments about anything you’re doing
I went through all of the reviews on this before booking. Lots of warnings about the road going in. That 3 miles close to the location takes over 45 minutes. I even contacted the manager of the property to ensure our Toyota Rav 4 with 8.5 in of ground clearance would be enough. I was told 6 would be enough. You want 9 or higher ideally a lifted vehicle. My spouse drove large vehicles in Iraq so it is not her skill but the degradation of the road that requires beyond a normal SUV or truck. This road is used by atvs, side by sides, motor bikes and vehicles. There is no separation. Due to that it is all sand and exposed bedrock. Our car repairs came out to 1500 total for the cracked shield and underbody damage. If you have something that is less than 9in of ground clearance do not book this. Wish someone was more specific about that especially when I directly asked. The fan and light were on one setting that could not be changed from a dead battery. When asked the manager about this I was directed to someone I was never introduced to and there was no follow up. The fridge is a great amount of space after being told that the chest freezer could be used there were reservations and we were told we should have enough space w our own fridge. It’s hot. If you can bring an evaporative cooler I would suggest it even in april/start of may. The owner was snarky right from the start and will be watching you closely. Disappointed not using Vrbo again.

Well worth the trip. Basecamp was as described. We had a great time walking the nearby trails and renting a side by side from Tom. We saw about 8 prairie grouse just inside the main gate and a large desert mule deer about 10 points, on a trail close by.

Couldn’t have wished for a better experience
This was by far the best trip I’ve made to Utah. I’ve gone to the Moab area every year for the last 6 years and this trip I was really hoping for something more off the grid and away from the crowds. I found base camp after searching through tons of properties and it seemed too good to be true- but I was wrong. I was greeted immediately by my first name and warmly welcomed by Tom and Collin. I got the rundown of how things worked, settled into my room, and was invited to take a gorgeous hike with Tom and his dog Jax, which I accepted right away. My whole stay I felt like a member of the family. They helped me find the best activities to suit my needs and sent me off with a walkie talkie just in case I found myself in a sticky situation. My only complaint is that I couldn’t stay longer. If you’re seeking a great experience in the Moab area and you want authentic, cozy, and welcoming, this is your best option. There’s so much to see and do and there’s nothing better than supporting the locals. Id give Tom 10 stars if I could ❤️.

Incredible location & nice room
My husband and I loved staying here. The property is gorgeous and feels very remote despite being relatively close to Moab. We felt there was no need to leave the property once there (and also didn’t want to make the drive out more than we needed to!) We enjoyed our hike to the Wind Caves and hardly saw any other people that day. Our dog was able to run around off leash. It’s mentioned in the listing, but be forewarned that the road is very rough getting to the property. Other cars have made the drive before, but I would personally be nervous without a 4x4 vehicle/something with decent clearance. Our room was very nice and had a comfortable bed. We spent a lot of time hanging out on the attached porch overlooking the Colorado River and Dead Horse Point. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to get away from the crowds in town and at the parks. We are hoping to return someday!

Don’t let the crazy traverse of Hurrah pass stop you from going here if you truly would like to unplug from the world . No service can be found here . Take your Off road vehicle and explore the other side of the pass . Great hosts ,very accommodating and full of local knowledge on where to go . Bring all the groceries you need as you are at least and hour away from town . Quietest place I have ever stayed and the moon is the brightest . Great stories and memories of this trip and this place made a lot of it possible .

A treacherous drive to paradise
If you are afraid of heights and are not driving a high wheel base vehicle, don’t try it! Otherwise, an experience of a lifetime! This is a destination that has kayaking, hiking, mountain biking trails, side by side rental, amazing beauty! Make sure you bring enough food for your stay because there are no runs to town! Once you are there you are away from everything except wonderful people and nature! We loved it!

Truly a hidden gem
Tom went above and beyond to help us navigate the pass to get in. The Base camp property is one of a kind. Linda showed us around the property. I had car trouble and they helped us remedy that, too. There are plenty of off roading, trail running, hiking trails and 2 frisbee golf courses. We were able to use Tom's kayaks to navigate the Colorado river. At night, the animal life come to life. Tom feeds the local wildlife from the front porch. We were able to relax and take in the desert vistas in the quiet Basecamp offers off the beaten trail. The care and passion Tom has for his property and guests' experience makes this place one of a kind. We will be back.

Off The Grid
The views from this property are priceless. We stayed in a small Queen room with a great back porch facing the Colorado River. Awesome sunset pics from there. We brought or Side by Side with us and hit all the trails from the property. One thing you need to be aware of. From downtown Moab it id a 2 hour ride to Base Camp. You are on very rugged terrain and Cross over Hurrah Pass. If you don't have a 4x4 with at least a suspension lift you will bottom out and jack up your vehicle. The county has done nothing to fix the road and you need some off road experience to handle the road to the Camp. We parked our trailer at the last parking lot on the right and I drove my lifted truck up and over the pass while my wife followed in the side by side. Luckily people there are honest and didn't mess with our trailer. All in all. If you have the correct vehicle it is an awesome place to stay.

Great weekend stay
Such a fun place to have a weekend getaway! Tom and the other residents were very friendly and made our stay fun. Tom has great suggestions for activities around the lodge which made our stay even better. The room was clean and very cute. The pictures on Vrbo are outdated and it was a pleasant surprise to see the newly updated room on arrival. The location is amazing but can be challenging to get to. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for an outdoorsy weekend off the grid.

A really nice guy who knows who he is and where he's suppose to be.

Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft

I was president and founder for 25 years of a large indoor soccer company. The managers worked really hard. We all did. I wanted to find a place to get away, where we could escape from the grind. I wanted something in the boonies. Driving to our Boise facility I saw people walk out of their homes, get in their canoes, and get in the Snake River. I need a river. Driving through West Texas coming back from our Houston and Austin facilities I saw folks walk out of their homes and get on their dirt bikes and on their atvs and take off down dirt trails. I need dirt trails.

Sometimes I would find a property that had some things, but not all things. Sometimes I’d find something new and the hunt would then grow more difficult with more requirements. Then, years later I hit the wall. I was done with 100 hour weeks and I needed an escape. I escalated my hunt for a property in the boonies. I started focusing on the four corners area central to most of our locations.

After looking at 50 or so properties one day my Moab real estate agent told me about a property on the other side of Hurrah Pass. I tried to get out here to view it in the BMW but in those days the road was rough and I tore the BMW all up.

Turns out Base Camp has everything and so much more. I bought this place fifteen years ago without knowing about the Wind Caves, Chicken Corner, Anti-Cline, Amasa Back, pottery sherds, arrowhead flakes, ancient dwellings, rock art, the critters of all kinds, dino tracks, fossils, all types of geology, the night sky, the quiet, the unlimited hikes and on and on. There has never been a day I haven’t appreciated what surrounds me. There never will be.

Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig

Things to know:

You should bring your own food and anything you’d like to drink besides water. Pretty much everything else is here. It’s 17 miles from Moab and it will take most a little over an hour. Take the road between the side by side rental place and McDonalds. At stop sign go straight. River on right. Black top ends. Follow signs that say Hurrah Pass. You don't normally need four wheel drive but you should have at least six inches of ground clearance. Without it your vehicle and Mother Earth may have occasional inappropriate relationships. If height is an issue you will have lots of issues up and down Hurrah Pass. We are 2.7 miles down Hurrah. Turn right at Base Camp sign and the first left will take you to the lodge.

Things are not static. They don’t stay the same all the time. The road changes, a rock falls down, there is a rain storm, anything can change the road. It may be fine in the morning and deteriorate in the afternoon, for multiple reasons. I mention the beach, but sometimes I don’t have one during snow melt and slightly after and the locations of the beach could change. In June and early July generally we have mosquitoes but hardly got any this year depending on the high water mark. We have a Milky Way most nights but in December and January it’s more difficult to see than in mid summer. I have side by sides for guests to use but sometimes they break and go in the shop at the same time so I might not have one while you are here. I feed critters at night on the front porch of the lodge. Some nights some critters don’t come or they take a long time to come. I have no control over who shows up when. Kobae usually hangs out on the porch in March, April, May, and early June. Once it gets hot he retreats in his hole and I generally only see him once a day when he comes out to eat until end of August and then he’ll want to go hiking every day, for miles. He’s not here from mid November thru late February when he goes to San Diego for the winter.
