Mid-September to mid-October = absolutely the best time of year here. Truly hard to beat.

Temperatures are typically 60s and 70s, in the 50s and 60s at night. The air is perfectly clear. It's maybe a little cold for swimming, but you'll have the beaches mostly to yourself, with kids back in school.

Sunrise is 6:30-7:00, meaning it's easy to sit on the deck – or the bench! – and watch the sun come up over the ocean.

There are lots of fun day trips: apple picking, fall foliage, Boston walking trips without the summer crowds, whale watching, farmer’s markets, King Arthur's Renaissance Faire, Martha's Vineyard and Newport and Newburyport without crowds…

Easy to get a table in a restaurant! And shopkeepers have time to chat.

And the weather still generally seems to be excellent (unless there's a hurricane).

Maybe visit Salem before it gets crazy at Halloween!
