Deane House - Number 17
The vintage Victorian facade of Number 17 is historic and beautiful. But step inside and you are definitely in the 21st century. The space is modern, relaxed and exudes tranquillity. With three bedrooms, each with their own bathroom and each on their own floor, the house epitomises true privacy and sanctuary for a family of six – or three couples.
At ground level is the open-plan living area and kitchen, all created to be compact yet spacious at the same time. There’s also a twin bedroom on this level. The wooden floors create a warm, cosy feel and the cast-iron wood-burning stove invites you to curl up and cocoon in winter. Outside, in an intimate courtyard, is a sun-drenched plunge pool and leisure area. Here you can kick back and chill out, or even do a spot of work if you must. The front of the house also has a little verandah with views over the surrounding rooftops all the way to the sea. Early morning coffee here is a gentle way to start the day.
If you go down a level from the ground floor, there’s a bedroom with a queen-size bed tucked away and offering the ultimate in seclusion – with its own bathroom too. Up a level from the living space, the en-suite master bedroom, also with a queen-sized bed, is the ‘eagle’s nest’ of the house. The views from here are expansive, and swivel seats in the leisure area with its picture window, give 360-degree options: look at the world outside or chat and commune with someone inside.
Throughout the house, décor is neutral and natural. Colours of stone and sage, textures of woven grass mats and pottery, with touches of living green in plants dotted throughout, make for an air of soothing calm. It’s a place to freely exhale, enjoy lazy sundowners around the pool with family or special friends, or simply breathe and let your mind roam free. There’s off-street parking and good security too, ensuring Number 17 really is the full package.
Just a five-minute walk from Number 17, is all the activity and vibrance of Sea Point’s renowned main road. Here, a palette of restaurants, delis and delectable coffee shops beckon you to enjoy the good life. And just across the road is the Sea Point promenade, hugging the Atlantic shoreline. There’s always plenty happening here if you’re in the mood for socialising. People walking, running, chilling and soaking up the natural theatre of the ocean; the backdrop of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head is just as enthralling.
This is a unique location to be – between mountain and sea, with all the enchanting attractions of the city – while knowing there’s a cosseted retreat back at Number 29. It’s simply the best of all worlds.
ABOUT SEA POINT
Sea Point is a great combination of residential and commercial properties. Homes and holiday accommodation range from holiday apartments and penthouses overlooking the sea to mansions, historical homes, and Sea Point hotels that are perfect for newlyweds and families.
Its main road slices through Sea Point and boasts loads of shops, eateries, cafés, clubs and fast-food takeaways.
Sea Point is flanked by Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean, and is only minutes away from the centre of Cape Town, the V & A Waterfront, and the CTICC. In fact, much of Sea Point climbs the gentle slope of Signal Hill, giving the homes and accommodation here a fantastic view over the city and the sea.
ATTRACTIONS
The Sea Point promenade is one of the area’s most popular draw cards – not only for tourists, but also for locals that enjoy breathing in the fresh sea spray and drinking in views of the ocean and mountains. The promenade stretches all the way along the beachfront of Sea Point; from Mouille Point to Bantry Bay. Along its length, there are awesome play parks for children, gym equipment, restaurants and coffee shops. Locals love to jog, walk or cycle along the promenade; and moms can bring their prams along too.
The Sea Point Pavilion is a swimming paradise. There is an Olympic-sized pool, two smaller pools, a kiddies’ pool (all filled by the fresh water of the sea), and diving boards. The pool complex is open every day from 07h00 to 19h00.
The trendy, fun beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton are a short drive from Sea Point, and are musts on balmy summer days in the Cape.
NEARBY ATTRACTIONS
Within only a few kilometres from Sea Point, there are many other attractions. Some of these are world-renowned. They include:
• The City Bowl, as the city centre is known
• Signal Hill and Lion’s Head
• Table Mountain and the cable car that takes visitors to the top
• The colourful cultural hub of the Bo-Kaap
• The Two Oceans Aquarium
• Robben Island Museum (at the Waterfront)
GETTING THERE
From the Cape Town International Airport, take Airport Ring Road and Airport Approach Road to the N2. Keep right to continue on Nelson Mandela Blvd/N2, follow the signs for Cape townN/Waterfront/CTICC. Take Strand Street exit. Merge onto Newmarket St. After 4.4km turn left onto Firdale Road. After 60 meters turn right into Edward Road. After 40 meters turn left onto Deane Road and the house will be about 80 meters up on your left hand side.
Uber is readily available and the My Citi bus stop is down the road from the house.
All over Cape Town, you’ll find paid parking structures, free street parking, and in the City Bowl and a few other areas, such as Sea Point, paid street parking. There are no parking meters, so when you see the “pay and display” parking sign, look for the parking attendant – or most likely they’ll find you. Parking is currently under R5 per 15 minutes.
In areas where street parking is free, expect to be approached by “car guards,” who ask for a tip in exchange for watching over your car.
