Countryside Home: Rose Cottage
This unique little house will make you feel as if you’ve gone back in time, the perfect spot to enjoy a slower pace of life.
Perfect for a family, working retreat, couples vacation, or for anyone looking for a country home away from home.
Outback you can dine under a tree for al fresco meals.
Stargazing year-round. Summer is my favorite with fireflies and sweet corn. Bonfires year-round, plan on s’mores!
The space
Welcome to Rose Cottage your country home away from home. This is our family country home, my mother purchased it a few years back to be closer to her mother, my grandma. As small worlds go, the house turned out to be my Maima's (great-grandma!) cousin's house. They built the house in the 1930s and raised four children in it. Even the dining room table and chairs are authentic and original!
We have extended family in this area and I have been coming back to this countryside since a was a little kid. I hope you enjoy all the charm, uniqueness, and character of the towns, land, culture, and home.
We are looking forward to your visit and want to provide as much information as you could ever need to help make it a pleasant, easy, and carefree stay.
Wifi is FAST and STRONG- just like our coffee options provided for you! Wifi code is provided through the app or there is a note on the desk beside the monitor.
Important note: 1930's life:
This home was built in the early 1930's and is purposefully kept in its intended simplicity. This means you will find NO DISHWASHER and NO AC. However, we do provide all the dishwashing accoutrements; fresh air, wonderful heat if it's winter of course, and a full kitchen complete with a full stove, all the cooking tools, and dishes, and freezer/fridge.
Not quite as vintage as what my grandma tells me- uphill both ways to school in the snow and outhouse- but not quite the same living as most are accustomed to. I hope this reprieve from your normal day-to-day life during your stay at Rose Cottage provides enjoyment in experiencing this simpler and slower way of life. If there is anything that would make your stay more enjoyable, or ideas you have after your stay, please share them so that we can make this the best Rose Cottage experience. We are opening our home to you and truly want it to be a relaxing, restful, and comfortable stay.
Nourishment:
Coffee makers are provided; single cup, brewer, and fFrench press. Pick your poison, along with tea options. Creamers are in the fridge; sugar next to the coffee station (might also check the fridge for sugar).
The water is filtered, and amazing. We have one of the highest quality water filters that was installed a few months ago. It's in the basement if you want to see how fancy it really is! Feel comfortable drinking from the tap, it's one of the joys of being in the country and having access to such crisp and cool refreshment. A note on the water: Rose Cottage is on a well which is tested yearly. The water is amazing however the mineral content in this part of western Pennsylvania is very high. The water may smell of sulphur from time to time (it's inconsistent).
Spices and oils are above the stove.
All the cooking pans, gadgets, and tools are for you to use and enjoy.
There is no dishwasher or garbage disposal. Note: Rose Cottage is on a septic system. Please do not put any food, peelings, etc., down the sink. There is a strainer in the sink which will catch debris; please put that in garbage can. We appreciate your sensitivity of the septic system.
Dish soap and sponges, including SOS pads, can be found underneath the sink. I hope you enjoy the relaxing view and soap suds citrus smell for a few minutes as a ritual as my mother taught me; to be grateful to have dishes to do in the first place- it means you have had food, water, and a house in which all of the above takes place. : ) Oh, mothers!
Bathing
A hairdryer is provided in the bathroom.
Shampoo, conditioner, and body soap are also provided.
Towels are provided for you initially with more in the closet to the left of the bathroom. Extra tissue, shampoos, paper towels, etc., are in that closet as well.
Bedrooms
There are hangers provided for you in the bedroom closets.
The dresser drawers in each bedroom are empty for your use.
The iron and ironing board can be found in the mudroom off of the kitchen.
The washer and dryer can also be found in the mudroom.
Laundry soap is located above the washer. Please do not use bleach when you wash; the mineral content reacts with the bleach and will turn your clothes rust-colored.
A few general notes:
We're a good vibe house. This penetrates through to our care for our community, earth, friends, and guests. We recycle, avoid waste, and reuse. We pride ourselves on being responsible hosts, which to us includes providing ways for you to have options in how you chose to be part of this world. We're not quite to the level of green we strive for, but you'll notice a few things around the house and a few notes here that lend themselves to our conscientious efforts by reducing our negative impact and providing positive influence.
Guest access
Check-in is anytime after 4 pm and check out is at 12:00 noon. If you need other arrangements let me know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
You have access to the entire home, except for the basement which can be found through the kitchen. (There is nothing down there, we keep the door closed for safety because of the stairs) but if you want to take a peek, go ahead!
Other things to note
We do recycle; you will find two bins to the left of the sink; one is for trash, the other is for recycling. Unfortunately, this area of the country does not recycle glass therefore it goes in the trash. Recycling includes paper, clean cardboard, cans and aluminum. You will find two bins outside by the corner of the yard/road; one is for recycling (marked) and the other is for trash.
