Renovated 3-BR boathouse built atop water in quiet cove; private float & trails
Historic, newly renovated, and secluded cabin with 3 bedrooms, this cottage provides everything you need for a quintessentially Maine vacation. The Boathouse literally sits atop a secluded cove in Casco Bay, and features access to the ocean via a private float, as well as a private trail system on 21 acres. The cottage is private, and quiet.
Built in 1920 by local craftsmen for Wall Street stockbroker Herbert Pomeroy Brown, this magnificent structure straddles Long Cove - known locally as Smugglers’ Cove for its colorful past - and features a 30 x 30 living room with an imposing stone fireplace, three bedrooms, a full kitchen, screen porch and laundry. Immediate access to Casco Bay is afforded by the property’s float. Our 12-foot tides mean that at low tide the cove becomes a sandy beach and wading location. A stream (locally called Devil’s Drean) runs through the property and under the Boathouse where it enters the ocean.
Two other cottages on the same property are nearby if guests want to add one or three bedrooms, and baths and kitchens.
Saturday 4 pm to 10 am weekly rental.
Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rental from a local company that delivers and picks up. A private trail system on our 21 acres (see map in photos) connects to a trail system maintained by the adjacent resort.
Guests share - with one other 3 BR cottage 80 yds away - access to the float and a small sandy beach that forms at low tide, as well as to the laundry and bicycles found in the shed. The newly built, signed trail system affords access to the property's 21 acres and to nearby lookouts.
The cottage is at the end of a dead-end gravel road, and is private and quiet.
Guests' primary contact will be with a local property manager, but our summer home is literally down the road and we have a welcoming attitude to new visitors, while respecting guests' privacy.
Play golf or tennis or dine at the adjacent Sebasco Harbor Resort.
Weekly linens and cleaning, high-speed internet; smart TV on request; all new kitchens, baths, and beds..
Our cottages are located in the Sebasco area of Phippsburg (“coastal Maine at its prettiest”), about an hour’s drive from Portland.
Phippsburg was named as one of the ten best cities in America ”to go off the grid” in March 2022, ranking Phippsburg alongside Carmel, California; Aspen, Colorado; and Sedona, Arizona. The website Livability.com had this to say about Phippsburg:
“This is coastal Maine at its prettiest, with picturesque wooden boat houses standing atop thick timber stilts plummeting into the Atlantic. This is the kind of place [where] you . . . chow down on the best lobster you’ll ever put in your mouth. It’s . . . a great place to ‘go dark’ for a bit.” (https://bit.ly/PhippsburgME)
At the southern tip of the Phippsburg peninsula, you can immerse yourself in American history by walking through American-Revolution-era batteries at Fort Baldwin, Civil War-era Fort Popham, and the site of the 1607 Popham Colony, a failed British colony which preceded the Mayflower’s landing at Plymouth. Play tennis or a round of golf at nearby Sebasco Harbor Resort, or go on a beautiful hike to Seawall Beach at Morse Mountain. Experience quintessential Maine’s fresh lobster and oysters at one of the peninsula’s waterfront restaurants. Take a stroll through galleries, local shops, and the Maine Maritime Museum in the historic shipbuilding town of Bath, just 20 minutes away. Or, head back towards the bigger town of Brunswick for dinner and a concert (30 min), check out the outlet shops of Freeport (45 min), walk through historic Boothbay Harbor (55 min), or explore the bustling port and nightlife in Portland (1 hr).

• Tottman Cove Beach - Phippsburg’s town beach, Phippsburg residents and renters only, 2 miles. Take the town parking permit on your cottage’s bulletin board.

It’s moderately hard, so it’s a good workout, but the reward is a vast, largely empty beach - Popham Beach without the people. Carry in/carry out. Take bug spray.
• Cove’s End Trails - Private trail system on our 21 acres that connects to a large public system created by the resort. See trail maps in photos.
• Day Trip to Monhegan Island - (http://www.balmydayscruises.com) leaves from Boothbay Harbor, one hour away (parking can be challenging - leave plenty of time to find it). Whales are seen, sometimes, on the ferry ride over or back.
• Kayak and Paddleboard Rentals - Seaspray Kayak (Brunswick) -they deliver and pick up at Cove’s End. (207)404-1100.

• Ferry to Seguin Island Lighthouse -(http://www.sequinisland.org/plan-your-visit/charters-to-seguin/ ) Seguin Island Light was commissioned by Geo. Washington in 1793, and the current structure - open for tours - is a Victorian relic built in 1857 featuring a first order Fresnel lens.
• Charter Fishing and Cruises - Cap’t Joe Jerome (West Point), (https://northeastsaltwater.com/) . Want to catch striped bass? Cap’t Joe is your man.
