We rented this property for the week of August 14th-20th, 2011.
The weather didn't really co-operate with us,it drizzled for the first two days, but we went out beachcombing and as a bonus it meant we had the beach to ourselves. On sunny days there were quite a few more seaglass seekers. We also got to explore the nearby town of Rockland as a result of the rain, it was very touristy, but had a grocery, mcd's, Dunkin donuts, etc.
We felt there was plenty of room in the cottage. We travelled with two teens, a two year old and a 4 year old,( putting up extra air mattresses in the master for the little ones).Someone could have slept on the pull out couch as well. Two bathrooms were nice to have, the laundry room handy, there was a good sized bbq though we didn't use it.
The closest town is really a village, and not really any restaurants, though there are some things served at the general store, and there was an ice cream shop and other cafe barn we didn't go in.
Bring some food with you as the nearest larger grocery store is 20 minutes away, and you won't want to have to leave right after arrival.
Kitchen is stocked with all the gadgets and stuff you'd need- and plenty of pantry space-
Nice big private yard, a pretty short walk to the water entry(almost 5 minutes at 2 year old pace). The high tide/low tide differences at the beach are awesome, the kids enjoyed being in the "deeper" water at one point in the day, then later walking way past that and still being on the shore. Be aware though, the second that tide rolls out, the people in the area flock to the beach, get there fast to get a good spot!
We brought some extra things we didn't really need, because the owners had really though to provide everything. Great time for our family.
The only downside would be of note to other asthmatics- a closed up cottage by the sea can be a bit musty when you first open it up (particularly with it raining non stop)., but we opened the windows and it cleared up in no time. it just meant a bit of extra inhaler useage for our youngest after we first arrived.
We would definitely return to this rental-and have recommended it to our friends with kids- good location, great price, plenty of room and beautiful scenery!
Things to do- check out the lighthouses, the closet one was in the Forest Gump movie. The Monehegan puffin cruise was ok, not many puffins, but we saw dolphins and seals so the kids were happy-
Try some fresh lobster from the dock-delicious!
