Pros: Generous covered porch space, nice hot tub, nice fire pit, close to Blue Ridge restaurants and activities, comfortable beds, and no bugs inside. Also, the owner called me personally to chat about our experience and seemed eager to improve on the below issues.
Drawbacks:
1) Minimal privacy: there is no "public" bathroom; you have to go through a bedroom to access every bathroom. Not great for middle-of-the-night usage. And only one bedroom is truly private (access to the bunk bed room and the porch bedroom is only through other bedrooms). The details of the layout were not given in the VRBO listing at the time we booked. As a group of friends - some single, some married - this was uncomfortable and inconvenient.
2) Several items around the house were iffy or broken. Nothing crucial, but overall it was sub-standard for permanent living (taped screen on screen door, tricky or leaking shower handles, mangled oven buttons, one broken floor lamp, etc.)
3) From pictures we expected to be up on a mountain, and one photo is captioned "long range mountain views". However, the home is [or feels like it is] at the bottom of mountains, off of a shoddy gravel road with trees crowded all around the home. It had a gloomy, camping-cabin in the woods atmosphere; not always a bad thing, but not what we were looking for. The unscreened decks didn't feel very useful because of the encroaching trees (bugs, little direct sun).
4) Bring some supplemental equipment if you plan to cook for large groups. As is often the case with rentals, the kitchen is technically fully stocked, but equipment is minimal and not in great shape. They provide exactly two oven mitts, the knives are very dull, and the pots and pans are quite small for a group beyond 6 people.
