Ridgway is the northern entrance of the scenic San Juan Skyway. An All-American Road which serves as a crossroad for commerce, transportation, history and scenery. The San Juan Skyway is one of the most spectacular roadways in the U.S. as it winds through unmatched scenery — it is a photographer’s dream.
Nestled in the picturesque Uncompahgre Valley and surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks of the Cimarron and San Juan Mountains, Ridgway is the “Gateway to the San Juans.” The movies True Grit and How the West was Won were both shot in the area.
There are many activities for families to enjoy while they are in the area:
During the summer, spring, and fall months there is historic/scenic driving, walking, hiking, biking, river rafting, kayaking, fishing, ATV and 4x4 jeep touring, hot balloon adventures, horseback riding, hot springs soaking, rock climbing, tennis (in Ridgway Town Park), and golfing (The Divide Ranch and Club on Log Hill). In addition, there is camping, boating, fishing, and walking in Ridgway State Park. Visit the Mesa Verde National Park cliff dwellings. Or take in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison with its spectacular canyon views and cool Gunnison River waters just east of Montrose.
During the winter months, there is snow skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, ice climbing, sledding, and much more.
Additionally, Telluride offers festivals almost every weekend of the summer season and has world class skiing during the winter months. Telluride has four waterfalls, the highest concentration of 14,000-ft. peaks in North America, and the most high-altitude passes.
Colorful hiking includes fields of wildflowers that begin to bloom in June and peak in July. Experience yellows, reds, and burnt orange color in late September and early October. Or take in the snow and serenity of the Rockies during the winter.
