A very lively pedestrian district in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, the Les Halles district takes its name from the former Baltard halls, now disappeared, which Émile Zola once called the "Belly of Paris". Now obsolete, this building was replaced in the 1970s by the Forum des Halles, a large shopping centre in the heart of the capital. Entirely renovated in the 2010's, the latter is now adorned with a remarkable architectural achievement, the Canopy, an immense structure of glass and steel with curves inspired by plants... A fashion temple, this complex includes, in addition to its many shops, a library, a conservatory, a hip hop centre, a swimming pool, cinemas, as well as cafés and restaurants.
The city's main attractions are just a few minutes' walk away. The nearest metro stations are Concorde (lines 1, 8, and 12) and Madeleine (lines 8, 12, and 14).
By public transport, you can reach the area via Châtelet - Les Halles station, the world’s largest underground station. In the Halles district, you can stroll through the pedestrian streets of Montorgueil, Tiquetonne, and Quincampoix, which are pleasant and lined with shops. You can also discover the Gothic Saint-Eustache Church, the Bourse de Commerce with its dome, and the Renaissance-style Fontaine des Innocents. The Nelson Mandela Garden, a 4-hectare green space, provides a lovely setting to relax, offering a beautiful view of Saint-Eustache Church. This garden, inaugurated in 2013, is very popular with both walkers and shopping enthusiasts.
