The “Carriage House” is actually a room over a detached garage next to the owner’s home. It contains windows as shown in the photo. Yet, what the photo does not make clear is there are no shades or curtains, not even on the door. Thus, no privacy. It has a small deck as shown in the photo, but what the photo does not show is that the view to the right of the deck is a large church parking lot which borders the property. There is a reason the listing does not contain a photo of the bathroom as it is small and unpleasant and that would be the case even if after each flush the toilet did not run until the cord was disentangled. That the listing suggests there is a “kitchen” is misleading as the room simply contains a small microwave and a mini-fridge in the corner. When we arrived, the room was musty, the type of odor that makes you wonder if there is mold somewhere in the room. The room was also cold. The owner told us he planned to add a second portable heater to the one that hummed in the corner, which was the only heat source. When we returned some time later, we plugged in the second heater we found waiting for us. Immediately the electricity went off. Since the owner had refused to provide us with his number, the only way we had to reach him was through the VRBO email. We eventually connected with the owner who had been out, but he could not figure out where the fuse box or circuit box was, and he had people coming over for a dinner party. He offered an extension cord to run from the garage to the rental, but did not explain how that would work, as we would have had to leave our door ajar all night. Temperatures dropped into the low forty degrees Fahrenheit that night. He never did fix the problem. We had no heat and no hot water. The only fuse that had not blown gave us three dim overhead lights. When we still had not heard from him the next day by mid-afternoon, we sent the owner another email through the VRBO website advising that we had no choice but to leave given that we had no heat, no light, and no hot water. We packed our things and left, cutting our long weekend short. We politely asked for a refund. The owner has curtly refused. We understand that things happen. What matters is what someone does when things happen. Here, the owner did nothing.
