My husband and I stayed at Ono Oasis for a week, and it is truly a spectacular property: a spacious house set on a half acre plus lot, surrounded by beautifully landscaped, lush tropical vegetation. The property is set high above the ocean, with spectacular views of the sunset over the water. The house is beautifully furnished in a Hawaiian style, with carved wooden furniture, antiques, and lovely accent pieces. The very large kitchen is built for entertaining, and has everything the guests might need to prepare a great meal. Wake up to the birdsong, grind the delicious Kona coffee in the morning, and sit outside with a cup, by the swimming pool, or in the outdoor kitchen area, and watch the birds flying from tree to tree. Some of the best bird watching on the Big Island is right at Ono Oasis, and I spent many hours in the heated salt water swimming pool, looking up at the palm and bamboo trees that are home to saffron finches, yellow billed cardinals, Northern cardinals, Japanese white eyes, and a number of other birds. Aimakapa fishpond is located just inland from Honokohau Beach in Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park, a few miles from Ono Oasis, and is another great area for bird watching. You might also see sea turtles sunning themselves on the beach here, too!
The beds and bedding at Ono Oasis are very comfortable and of high quality. The host provides plenty of towels and beach towels in the well appointed bathrooms. The ceiling fans provide a lovely breeze at night, combined with the breeze coming in from the floor to ceiling screened balcony doors. Ono Oasis is just a couple of miles from Magic Sands Beach and Alii Drive, and it is an easy trip to Safeway for groceries. Costco is only a few miles away, as well. The property manager met us at Ono Oasis to walk us through the property, and was responsive to any questions we had later. This is a wonderful place to stay, private and elegant. A day trip across the island (with bird watching along the way) to Hilo, with lunch at Tina's Garden Café, a Thai fusion restaurant, is best followed by a dip in the pool at Ono Oasis. The pool is a perfect way to end all of the days! One trip to Ono Oasis is just not enough; we hope to return!
