Ensuring an effortless self-catering stay, Braithwaite has a convenience store plus a choice of friendly pubs and other eateries, while the bustling market town of Keswick – home of the Cumberland Pencil Museum – sits at the top of Derwentwater, just 2 miles east. At the southern end of the lake, Borrowdale (9 miles) is a must-see. For contrast, head to Georgian Cockermouth (11 miles), a gateway between the western lakes and the Solway Coast.
