Stunning cottage with incredible views of Dartmouth and River Dart. Dog friendly
Cliff Cottage is an idyllic hideaway with spectacular views of Dartmouth and the River Dart. Situated close to the historic centre of the picturesque and peaceful village of Kingswear, it is ideally placed for walks on the coastal path, sea and river activities, and the steam train station. The elevated position of this property above the village provides a perfect setting to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the activities on the river.
Kingswear has two excellent pubs, an Italian wine bar, two cafes, a village shop and a post office, a thriving marina, a yacht club, an historic church and a village hall for community events, while Dartmouth with all its history and its multitude of charming pubs, cafes, restaurants, galleries, shops and boutiques, market, museum, and arts centre is readily accessed by a short and scenic ferry ride.
We have fully renovated Cliff Cottage to a high standard. With 8ft ceilings and good size windows, it is a bright and cheerful place. It has everything you might want from a holiday cottage - spectacular views from upstairs and downstairs front rooms, historic features such as sash windows, stripped wooden floors and doors, and painted wood panelling, but with a spacious modern kitchen and modern upstairs bathroom. There are two bedrooms, a master bedroom with double bed and views of the River Dart and beyond, and a cosy second bedroom with built-in bunk beds set at right angles to each other. Each room has heating, bedside lighting, clothes hanging space and power sockets. The master bedroom has a desk and chair where it is possible to work with a view over Dartmouth! The upstairs bathroom has a modern white suite and walk-in shower. Downstairs, the living room has a wood burning stove, a large modern sofa, two Dartington easy chairs, a card table, a TV and DVD player. The house has internet but also a good collection of DVDs and board games should you prefer 'traditional' fireside entertainment. The living room also has electric heating and window shutters when needed. The modern kitchen has electric heating, a double Belfast sink, modern electric cooker, microwave, toaster, and fridge with small freezing compartment. There is also a washing machine and even a breadmaker should you feel inspired! There is a good sized kitchen table with 4 chairs. You can extend to seat 6 by using the bench seat. There are modern but interesting lights on dimmer switches in both downstairs rooms to create a nice ambiance after sunset.
Outside: At the front there are two seating areas; a patio close to the house which is conveniently shaded during the hottest part of the day, and a lower decked area for sun worshiping. Both are quite sheltered, private and ideal for alfresco dining. There is a small but pretty garden between the two. From teatime through to sunset the whole of the front of the house is getting the sun (assuming it's out!). At the rear there is a quiet courtyard, which is sunny through the middle part of the day, bordered by a small cliff with many interesting plants and ferns growing out of it. Within the courtyard there is an outside tap, a clothes line, and an externally accessed additional WC with sink.
There are approximately 80 steps up from the street to reach this oasis of beauty and tranquillity. Some of the steps are steep. While dogs and small children are allowed, please be aware that small children or indeed small dogs may find the steps a challenge. The steps are well worth the effort when you get to the top, but any guests would require a level of fitness and mobility. You should also be aware that cottages of this type have quite steep stairs within them too.
Parking: There is some free on-street parking available in Kingswear several minutes walk from the bottom of the steps, or conveniently a pay and display carpark at the Darthaven Marina only 2-3mins walk away. Alternatively there are good public transport links from Paignton, including the steam train!
As a family we have enjoyed taking the children to Dartmouth crabbing on the harbour wall, visiting the shops and market, eating out, paddle boarding/canoeing, walking to Dartmouth Castle for an ice-cream or longer walks out the coastal path.
On the Kingswear side we have enjoyed walking to Mill Cove for a swim and longer walks to beaches at Scabbacombe ,and Man Sands or even Brixham (bus back!), and walks in Hoodown woods or by the railway path, as well as meals out locally.
Local houses to visit include NT properties Coleton Fishacre and Agatha Christie's Greenway. Both have lovely gardens. Boat trips can be taken to Totnes, Dartmouth Castle, Dittisham and Greenway. There really is so much to do in this beautiful area but just sitting outside the house and taking in the views by day or night is a special experience in its own right!

I’m from Ireland but live in Bath with my partner Colin and 2 children who are 19 and 17. We all love Kingswear and the many activities it offers: swimming in the sea; coastal and inland walks; river activities and walks; beautiful views; friendly people; quaint and interesting village of Kingswear and town of Dartmouth; good weather!; pubs and restaurants; market and cooking in the cottage; sitting on the terrace soaking up the view with a glass of wine.
Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft
The photo is of myself and my son canoeing on the Dart. We hired the canoes. We have also hired paddle boards and been accompanied on the Dart by a seal! We have taken the boat trip up to Totnes, another lovely town. On the way the river meanders around Agatha Christie’s house and local vineyards. The local wine is available in some restaurants in Dartmouth and is very good! I enjoy an active day then a relaxing evening at the cottage. A lot of the time we have spent there is outdoors time. I could sit for a long time watching the activity on the river; boats, rowing races, ferries, and of course the steam train can be seen and heard approaching Kingswear on the track along the river bend. Even when it turns dark it’s nice to sit on the bench wrapped in a blanket watching the lights of Dartmouth, the upper and lower ferries crossing the river and the seagulls still calling out as they settle for the night.
Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig
It is lucky as essentially it’s the last in the row. There is a right of way in front of it but the residents in the last house use another path, so it’s only the post person who comes past. So you have much greater privacy and a larger outdoor space to use. There is a bench and table just outside the house and then another table and chairs on the decking below the garden. It is also unusual as it has greenery. It’s a small garden but full of flowers in summer and local quite tropical or Mediterranean plants including a palm and a banana tree. It’s also (in our view) a very attractive interior decor with white walls, light coloured painted wooden panelling, characterful furniture and comfortable beds.
