Main Description
The cottages sleep 4 to 18 in 3 cottages, with group dining in the Garden Room for 20 guests:
Barton House sleeps 9
Cartwheel Cottage sleeps 5
Groom's Lodge sleeps 4

All the properties have been awarded the Visit England 4 star for many years.

Additional onsite activities include onsite canoeing, fishing, archery, massage and yoga, making it perfect for group gatherings in a tranquil countryside setting.

Barton House:
An idyllic Victorian farmhouse overlooking the old meadow and trout lake. All properties have held the Visit England 4-star award for many years.

The house sleeps 9 in 4 bedrooms, with space for two travel cots. All rooms are spacious. Upstairs, there’s a family room (double and single beds), twin room no.1, twin room no.2 with an en suite, and a shared family bathroom. Downstairs, twin room no.3 is accessed by one step from the entrance hallway. Across the hall are a large farmhouse kitchen, breakfast room, shared shower, and toilet. The dining room seats 8 to 10 people, and the spacious TV lounge has three three-person sofas. Both rooms feature wood burners.

Heating is provided by a central oil boiler, with solar PV panels supplementing hot water. Additional heating comes from two Wood Warm wood burners, with free logs for indoor use.

The well-equipped farmhouse kitchen can cater to groups in the adjoining Garden Room, with place settings for 20 people. Connected to the farmhouse via a semi-covered walkway, the Garden Room includes a shower, toilet, laundry facilities, seating for 20, a food prep area, a small sofa area for 5, and another wood burner.

Outside the Garden Room are outdoor seating, a table, an outdoor spa, and a firepit area in the meadow.

The farmhouse has excellent 4G mobile signal for creating mobile hotspots. Free Wi-Fi is available in the Guest Office, though not suitable for gaming or streaming.

Cartwheel Cottage:
The old Chauffeur's accommodation is an 18th-century cottage featuring two bedrooms, including a master/family room with a four-poster bed.
The living room has a log wood burner, and all rooms offer superb views.
This reverse-level accommodation includes a large ground floor reception with access to private gardens and adjacent parking.
2 well behaved pets by arrangement.

Grooms Lodge:
Originally the Estate's saddlery and Groom’s store, this cottage has been lovingly converted into an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area.
All rooms are on the ground floor, including a double bedroom, a twin bedroom, and a family bathroom.
The lounge features a new log burner and LCD TV.
It's ideal for families with small children and individuals with limited mobility.
2 well behaved pets by arrangement.

The farmhouse and cottages are nestled among enchanting inner and outer courtyard gardens and a play area, surrounded by meadows, an orchard, lakes, and forest. There are ample spaces for summer barbecues, outdoor fires, and activities for celebrations of any size.

In recent years, we've hosted a variety of groups, offering on-site activities such as canoeing, archery, yoga, and massage. We can also help organize off-site activities like coasteering, climbing, and cycling.

Relax and unwind in the Health Suite with an indoor hot tub and sauna, or enjoy the outdoor spa with meadow and lake views. You can also book yoga sessions (group or individual) in the yoga barn, holistic massages, or a range of other treatments.

For outdoor enthusiasts, nature trails wind through the grounds and woodland, the lakes offer Canadian canoeing sessions and coarse fishing, and cycle trails are easily accessible. A small selection of bikes is available for hire.

From Whitechapel Cottages, you can easily explore the area's attractions, including some of the best surfing beaches, the rugged beauty of Exmoor National Park, and delightful country pubs.

The region
Few places in Britain can boast the stunning combination of landscapes found in North Devon and Exmoor. With spectacular cliffs, secret coves, golden beaches, wild moorlands, sparkling river valleys, and lush rolling hills, this area is a truly special destination.

North Devon's 171 sq km of outstanding natural beauty has earned it UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, thanks to its unique blend of landscapes, wildlife areas, rich cultural heritage, and committed communities. North Devon offers a harmonious balance between heritage and modern life, making it a friendly, laid-back, and beautiful part of the country.

Here are some local favorites to explore:

South Molton
Just a 5-minute drive away, South Molton dates back to early Saxon times and features traditional architecture and a growing reputation for antique shops. It hosts a regular pannier market on Thursdays and Saturdays, selling fine arts, crafts, and local produce. The town also boasts the largest honey farm in the country, a modern indoor climbing wall, and an indoor swimming pool.

Exmoor
Known as Lorna Doone country after R.D. Blackmore’s famous novel, Exmoor is one of Britain’s smallest national parks. It features beautiful moorlands and charming villages like Dunster, home to the magnificent Dunster Castle, and Exford, ideal for exploring the ancient Tarr Steps and engaging in fishing, shooting, and riding. The moor is about a 10-minute drive away.

Dartmoor
Whitechapel's location makes it perfect for exploring all of Devon, including Dartmoor, which is within an hour’s drive. This proximity also makes South Devon easily accessible.

Lundy Island
Lundy Island, 3 miles long and half a mile wide, has a history dating back to the Neolithic period. Named ‘Puffin Island’ by the Norse, it still hosts many puffins today. Owned by the National Trust, Lundy welcomes visitors to enjoy its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. You can reach the island by sailing on the MS Oldenburg from Ilfracombe or Bideford, or by flying there by helicopter.

Lynton and Lynmouth
Dubbed the Little Switzerland of England, these twin villages developed around two deep wooded river valleys in Exmoor. The Victorians turned them into holiday centers, opening a cliff railway in 1890 to connect Lynmouth to Lynton, offering stunning views. The journey by car takes about 45 minutes.

Explore North Devon and Exmoor for a unique and memorable experience, blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern comforts.
