NEARBY ATTRACTIONS (distances in meters):
* Plaka (100m): in the shadow of the Acropolis, hillside Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewellery, clothes and local ceramics. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late, and Cine Paris shows classic movies al fresco in the summer.
* Ermou Street (150m): with fashion shops promoting most international brands, it is in the top 5 most exclusive shopping streets in Europe and the 10th most exclusive retail street in the world.
* Syntagma Square (380m): admire the Changing of the Guard from the elite group of soldiers. In their traditional uniform, they guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Hellenic Parliament.
* Horologion of Andronikos Cyrrhestes (550m): also known as "Aerides" or "Tower of the Winds". An octagonal tower which was a sundial and weather vane, carved of Pentelicon marble. It was erected in the Roman Agora of Athens by the Greek astronomer Andronikos Kyrristis in the first half of the 1st century BC.
Note: the 5 framed gravures hanging on the flat's living room walls are from this local monument.
* Monastiraki (650m): a flea market in the old town of Athens and one of the main shopping districts. Clothing boutiques, souvenir shops and specialty stores. A major tourist attraction and a place for bargain shopping.
While there, taste the famous Greek street food “souvlaki”: fast food consisting of small pieces of meat (pork or chicken) grilled on a skewer. It can be served on the skewer or inside a rolled pitta, with sauce and sliced tomato and onion.
* Acropolis (800m): a universal symbol of the classical spirit and civilization and the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world. In the second half of the 5th century BC, Athens, following the victory against the Persians and the establishment of democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states. In the ages that followed, an exceptional group of artists put into effect the ambitious plans of Athenian statesman Pericles and, under the inspired guidance of the sculptor Pheidias, transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts. The most important monuments were built during that time: the Parthenon, built by Ictinus, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, designed by Mnesicles and the small temple Athena Nike.
* Benaki Museum (950m): this museum houses over 100,000 artifacts and showcases the many eras, civilizations and cultures which have influenced the development of Greece.
* Kallimarmaro Panathenaic Stadium (1.100m): one of the main historic attractions, it is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. It was built by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos c. 400 BC. It was re-built in marble by Herodes Atticus, an Athenian Roman senator, by 144 AD and had a capacity of 50,000 seats. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896. It is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon. It is also the last venue in Greece from where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place.
