Often cited as a gateway to the outer islands and north mainland, here you’ll find all the charm and hospitality of a traditional Scottish and Shetland community.
Voe is a perfect destination for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of a busy, modern life. You can spend your days exploring the rugged coastline and rolling hills, taking in the fresh sea air and soaking up the breath-taking scenery.
Toft is approximately 10 miles North of Voe, from here is the regular ferry service to Yell and Unst. Both islands offer some of the most spectacular landscapes in Scotland, which include bird populated sea cliffs, white sand beaches and heather-covered moors.
Even closer at hand, approximately 5 miles, is the Laxo ferry terminal. A 30 minute crossing will take you to the Isle of Whalsay, also known as the Bonnie Isle.
You are also within short driving distance to the village of Brae, which has a number of bars and restaurants including the Mid Brae Inn, Brae Hotel, and the Busta House Hotel. Another option is to head into Shetland’s capital of Lerwick, or through to Scalloway, the ancient capital that continues to thrive.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or an adventurous holiday, Shetland and Voe have something to offer, with friendly locals, incredible scenery, and unbeatable access to some of Scotland’s most beautiful places.

Voe House
(Photo taken in 1870s, image supplied by Shetland Museum & Archives)
T.M. Adie married in 1834, and had a family of 13, of whom 12 survived into adulthood; the old house they lived in became very crowded. ‘You have no idea,’ he wrote once in a letter, ‘how we are packed together in the uncomfortable place we occupy.’ He promptly set about solving the problem, and Voe House was built around 1862. It was an Adie family home for over a hundred years.
In the 1870s, two of Thomas’s sons, William Adie and Thomas Mountford Adie II, became partners in the business, with William Adie being the principal partner. The firm became T. M. Adie & Sons, and retained the name until its eventual closure a hundred and twenty years later.
