We’re in the heart of Antwerp's historic city center, overlooking the UNESCO Cathedral of Our Lady, the square (Groenplaats) and old city quarter (The Grote Markt).
The Groenplaats square is a popular meeting spot for both locals and tourists alike, with its many outdoor cafes and restaurants offering a perfect spot to enjoy a drink or meal while watching the world go by. You can also explore Antwerp's most famous street "Meir" filled with a mix of high-end designer stores and independent boutiques, offering something for everyone.
Surrounded by elegant buildings, picturesque cobblestone streets, and stunning architecture, this vibrant area is steeped in history and culture.
From the magnificent Cathedral of Our Lady to the magnificent Town Hall, there is no shortage of architectural marvels to admire in this area, including "Vlaeykensgang", Antwerp's oldest street that is over 420 years old still kept to its original condition.
In the historical part of Antwerp, you can step back in time and immerse yourself in the city's rich past. Wander through the charming streets and admire the stunning architecture, from grand Gothic cathedrals to beautifully preserved Renaissance buildings. Visit the city's many museums and galleries, including the Rubenshuis, which houses a collection of works by the famed Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens.
The historical part of Antwerp is also home to a vibrant nightlife scene, with numerous bars and nightclubs catering to all tastes. And when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, head to one of the many parks and gardens scattered throughout the area, offering a peaceful respite in the midst of the city's vibrant energy.
Shops, restaurants, and the Plantin-Moretus Museum are a short walk from our door. Antwerp Zoo and Antwerp Central Rail Station are a 15-17min walk away.
WALKING:
Getting around in Antwerp is perhaps best done on foot, as the city is very walkable. Distances are short and there is so much to see and do on the way, that you don't have to walk a long stretch. For example, walking from Antwerp Central Station to the river Scheldt, via the main shopping street 'Meir', the 'Groenplaats' and City Hall, is only about 2 kilometres.
So, if you don't mind walking and you want to take in all the beautiful things underway, walking is the best thing you can do.
BICYCLE:
Riding a bicycle, is also an awesome way for getting around in Antwerp. Velo Antwerp is the city's network of bicycle stations, where you can rent a bike in one station and leave it in the same or a different bicycle station. We provide guests free a complimentary 24-hour day pass as a welcome gift, where they can have unlimited 30min rides for 24-hours. The rates are cheap if you want to use it for longer than 30mins. Simply download the Velo Antwerp app on your smartphone to see all the bicycle stations!
TRAM:
The next best option, is taking the tram. The tram rides above and under the ground. People from Antwerp love to take the subway or metro, as it is fast and always close-by. All the trams in Antwerp are from the company 'De Lijn'. You will see their yellow - grey -white logo everywhere. The trams will bring you faster from a to b, and if you carry luggage, this is the best deal.
If you're planning to use the tram a couple of times, than I recommend you get the Antwerp City Card, as you can then travel as much as you want, without the hassle of getting tickets. With this card, all transporation with trams and buses is included. So, you literally just jump on and off, totally carefree!
CAR:
You can take your car to drive around in the city, but I don't recommend this.
Parking is hard to find and is expensive since you are in the city. And you might get stuck in traffic, so that's a waste of time.
TAXI/ UBER:
Taxi's do not freely roam around on the streets like in other city's. Most of the time you have to order one via phone or online and it is known to be very expensive. IF you want a taxi best to get an UBER since it's a cheaper and more convenient option, best for after a night out and you're too tired to walk or cycle!
ELECTRIC STEP:
Bird and LIME has landed in Antwerp, so now you can use the electric step to speed from a to b. They're also fun and easy to use but a little bit pricier than a local bike. Simply download the app and locate the nearest step.
