Hanwell House, Long Melford
A superb holiday house of considerable standing, steeped in history in the very centre of a picturesque village. Hanwell House has undergone an extensive programme of careful and sympathetic restoration. The property sleeps up to 5 guests with a king-size bedroom, twin room and a smaller single suitable for a child and contains impressive reception rooms and a courtyard garden all within immediate walking distance of amenities.
Hanwell House is a splendid Georgian village house of considerable character in the heart of Long Melford, a village renowned for its amenities and the stunning countryside which surrounds it. The property has been extensively renovated with an exacting eye for detail and furnished and decorated in a manner fully sympathetic to a house of the Georgian/Regency era. The property was occupied by Rear Admiral William Hanwell in the early 19th Century and is adorned by a blue plaque commemorating his tenure. The property showcases some fine examples of stucco cornice, impressive Georgian Venetian sash windows and high ceilings.
The property contains an entrance hall with historic photographs of the village, the house itself, and the original Georgian staircase. Two reception rooms are arranged to each side with a sitting room containing an open fireplace and a Smart TV and a separate dining room. The kitchen is well-appointed with a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, kettle and toaster as well as an oven and induction hob. There is a rear utility area leading out to the courtyard garden containing garden furniture suitable for dining al-fresco or a morning coffee.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, all furnished with some impressive antique furniture and comfortable beds. The main bedroom provides a king-sized bed and has the benefit of an en-suite cloakroom. Bedroom 2 contains twin beds with a third room containing a smaller single ideal for children and which also contains a desk suitable for a laptop workspace. There is a further cloakroom and a separate bathroom containing a bath with a rainfall style shower head over and twin pedestal wash-hand basins and a further W.C.
Hanwell House is within a moment's walking distance of the amenities of the village. Long Melford itself offers a variety of amenities including numerous public houses and restaurants, art galleries, tea rooms and cafés, independent retailers, antique shops and visitor attractions. Of particular note is both Melford Hall operated by the National Trust and the privately owned Kentwell Hall, both of which are periodically open to the public throughout the year. A walk up to the village green is highly recommended with superb views from the Church down towards the village.
The nearby market town of Sudbury operates a market on both Thursday and Saturday and contains a host of further attractions including Gainsborough’s House, a museum and gallery for the famous local artist, Thomas Gainsborough. The water meadows provide acres of picturesque grounds with miles of footpaths to explore. Slightly further afield, the cathedral town of Bury St Edmunds offers plenty to discover including nearby Ickworth House, another National Trust venue, with stunning park-like grounds.
Hanwell House offers a unique experience to enjoy a thriving Suffolk village in elegant accommodation ideal for a short break.
