Thanks to its central location, it is the ideal place to visit the city.
In the immediate vicinity there are numerous churches, the theater, the library, the San Domenico museums and the main services such as bars, restaurants, pizzerias, wine bars, laundries and shops of all kinds.
Forlì is a popular destination throughout the year. During the summer, in particular with the "Summer Squares" review and the rich program of shows of the San Domenico Arena, the city comes alive with numerous cultural initiatives that allow you to experience the historic center through access to places normally not that can be visited and the enhancement of artistic beauties, even in the most unknown corners of the city.
Also not to be missed is a visit to the Franco Agosto Urban Park, a few hundred meters from Piazza Saffi, a unique green area that covers an area of 26 hectares bordered by the Montone River. The area has a pond with free-range geese and ducks, a sports center with basketball, five-a-side football, beach, bowls and a riding stable. There are also spaces equipped for children with bouncy castles and other games, a fitness trail and various refreshment points.
The museum complex of San Domenico, in the heart of the historic center, is worth a visit. Home to the oldest section of the Pinacoteca, a catalyst for visitors thanks to the prestigious exhibitions, this year dedicated to Dante. The complex hosts the famous Hebe by Canova and the Lady of the Gelsomini by Lorenzo Di Credi.
ON THE TABLE
The symbolic dish of the Forlì area is passatelli strictly cooked in broth. How can we not disdain a steaming piadina in the typical kiosks? Good with any filling, it is best enjoyed with squacquerone, a soft cheese typical of the area, ricotta or cured meats, always accompanied by Sangiovese, the good red of the Romagna hills.
HISTORICAL NOTES:
Founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. C. with the name of Forum Livii, at the intersection of the consular road with the road that led to Tuscany, the city is located in the eastern part of the Po Valley along the Via Emilia about 30 kilometers from the seaside resorts of the Adriatic coast and at the foot of the green hills of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines.
Forlì retains significant traces of both the Romanesque and the Renaissance periods, which saw Caterina Sforza the undisputed lady of the city. Also noteworthy is the presence of a rich heritage from the rationalist period of the 1920s and 1930s.
WHEN TO GO AND WHAT TO SEE:
In the historic center, the two main roads of Roman origin are recognizable, divided into the four main courses (Mazzini, Garibaldi, Diaz and della Repubblica), which converge on Piazza A. Saffi. Some of the most representative buildings of the various city eras overlook it:
• the Romanesque basilica of San Mercuriale with its imposing original 12th century bell tower;
• the Town Hall, seat of the Town Hall, dating back to the fourteenth century and remodeled several times, with the Clock Tower;
• the fifteenth-century Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo Albertini, home to interesting exhibitions;
• the twentieth-century Palazzo delle Poste, an example of twenty-year architecture of which we also find significant traces in the buildings of Viale della Libertà, including the recently renovated EX-Gil and Piazzale della Vittoria, near the railway station.
The Ordelaffi family's dominion over the city, which lasted about two centuries, meant that Forlì was enriched with noble palaces that can be admired walking along the streets of the historic center, in particular Corso Garibaldi and Via P. Maroncelli. Pino III Ordelaffi was responsible for the fortification of the Rocca di Ravaldino completed in 1480, now dedicated to Caterina Sforza.
