THE PALACE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
The ancient 13th-century tower belonged to the very powerful Donati family. With the fortunes of the Donati family waning, the tower was incorporated in the second half of the 16th century into the palace of the Albizi, a family of Florentine merchants and bankers who long rivaled the Medici for city supremacy. From the Albizi, the palace then passed in the 18th century to the Tassinari family and finally in 1929 to the family of the present owners.
The apartments, located on a very central and ancient street, as well as the entire palace and tower, are of great historical interest and bound by the Superintendence of Artistic and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. It is therefore the ideal place to immerse yourself in the history and beauty of Florence's Golden Age.
The Torre Donati apartments are ideally located within walking distance of Florence's most important sights and museums: among others, the Basilica of Santa Croce, Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery, the Bargello Museum, the Duomo with Giotto's Bell Tower, the Medici Chapels in San Lorenzo, the Accademia Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, as well as Palazzo Pitti, the church of Santo Spirito, and the Boboli Gardens on the Arno River.
Since the owner is a librarian by profession, he is, of course, obliged to suggest a visit or two to the nearby Oblate Public Library on Via dell'Oriolo, built in a spectacular architectural setting, with a large terrace and bar practically under Brunelleschi's Dome of the Cathedral, internet, reading rooms, international magazines, and children's room.
Bakery, greengrocer, butcher, newsstand, supermarket and pharmacy are just a few steps from the apartment, as well as the typical market of Sant'Ambrogio where you can find all the Tuscan gastronomic specialties, and trattorias and restaurants, with excellent traditional Tuscan cuisine.
And finally shopping in the boutiques of the most famous Italian and foreign designers in the nearby Via Calzaiuoli, Via Roma, Via Tornabuoni, and Via della Vigna Nuova.
