The Old Captains Lookout

Summary:
Welcome to The Old Captain's Lookout, you'll be close to everything when you stay at our beautiful and authentic high street Townhouse.

On the high street itself you are close and immersed into the heart of Falmouth. Boasting stunning sea views overlooking the harbour you can fully embrace the Cornish lifestyle from the comfort of your own space.

Short walking distance from an abundance of shops, bars, restaurants and the beach. You are perfectly located to enjoy Falmouth and all it offers!

The Space:
The entrance is located on the high street itself, after which you enter a stairway taking you to the front door (right at the top of the stairs).

Entering the property you are greeted by a tall lobby with a spiral staircase taking you up to the second floor.

The kitchen is located on the right as you enter, which is modern and well equipped.

The lounge is located on the left as you enter the property which boasts spectacular views of the harbour and sea providing a tranquil space to relax and watch the world go by.

Upstairs you will find a bathroom located directly in front of you offering essentials.

To your left and right from the top of the stairs our the bedrooms. The Master on your left and the second on your right. The second offering phenomenal views of the harbour and the master with views of the high street.

Guest Access:
Parking is free along Dunstanville, Stratton and tehidy terrace and many side roads near to the property (within a 5 minute walk) are suitable places to park, this is available 24/7 and is all free. However, we also recommend long stay parking at Town quarry car park for ease costing £8 per 24 hour period this is approximately a 5 minute walk from the property. The car park is safe and has a very good reputation for security. As well as this there are a number of paid car parks around Falmouth if you prefer elsewhere or know the area.

The Neighborhood:
Wander Outside to reach Falmouth’s Old High Street and be welcomed by an eclectic mix of boutiques, independent shops, hidden courtyards and opeways that give glimpses of the sea.

And when out among its cobbled streets you’ll discover why Falmouth is rated among the top five places to live in the whole of the Southwest. A town rightly regarded as home of fine culinary flair, with an ever-evolving range of award-winning, independent, and pop-up restaurants just waiting to be relished.

Be drawn in by the smell of freshly baked goods at Stones Bakery that are prepared on-site each morning, sample the sweet and savoury goods along with a barista prepared coffee.

Be tempted by the promise of a rustic meal at the Boathouse or go to The Star and Garter to indulge in local ingredients at the gastropub. Before jumping on a ferry for an excursion on the water you could grab something to-go, then dangle your legs over the water at the Prince of Wales Pier. Don’t forget to look back at 49 High Street as you cross the harbour and find your window from the water!

Bustling with life, the creative town of Falmouth has been home to an arts school for over a hundred years, so culture abounds here. From The Poly, a unique arts centre with film screenings and exhibitions, to the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, and plenty of other independent galleries in between, your appetite for the artistic will certainly be satisfied.

From the Pier there are regular ferry services that provide scenic trips across the harbour to the picturesque villages of Flushing and St.Mawes Or alternatively you could travel up the Fal river to Truro and enjoy a day in the city exploring the cathedral. From your vantage point at 49 High Street you’ll see these ferry boasts traveling the harbour, you could even look back at your waterside home as you yourself cross the water.

Falmouth is an ancient historical harbour offering a strong and prominent boating culture, ihere is a plethora of options to keep yourselves busy from sailing (hire or lessons), yacth building, a number of regattas throughout the year to enjoy if boating is your niche. Fishing and sea safaris can be arranged and organised from the convenience of a short walk to the pier which offer a lively and exciting day out with friends or family. Falmouth is lucky to be surrounding by phenomenal coast line and as a result costal walks are plentiful, which gives you a unique opportunity to explore Cornwalls rugged coastline.

You’re never far from a beach in Cornwall, and Falmouth has some of the best.

There is so much to explore on foot. The Blue-flag Gyllyngvase is the most popular beach in town, a 20 minute stroll away through town, but be sure to factor in time for distractions along the way, the sights and sounds of the bustling high street. Gylly benefits from RNLI lifeguards during the summer and a brilliant café and restaurant. Castle Beach and Swanpool Beach sit either side of Gyllyngvase.

For seclusion, head over to the Helford River, where secret coves and quiet beaches are managed by the National Trust nestle within verdant, treelined riverbanks. Pack your swimming attire to make the most of the clear waters of South Cornwall.

Life just feels better with sand in your toes and salt in your hair.

Part of the appeal of the Cornish way of life is embracing the outdoors, if you fancy embodying this naturalistic rural way of living, a trip to the breath-taking Helford River area is needed! Either take a boat or a short drive over to the renowned ancient woodland and creeks that are simply brimming with nature.

Allow serenity into your life, slowly taking in the unspoilt iconic Frenchman’s Creek, of Daphne du Maurier fame. Perfect for a complete day out with the subtropical gardens housing rare exotic plants, flourishing here in the southern Cornish climate to a dog friendly beach with crystal clear waters, there’s something for everyone! Even an ideal spot to enjoy a local ale at Ferryboat Inn before heading home to 49 High Street.

Soak up Cornwalls cultural heritage and be transported back in time with a visit to the 16th century St Mawes Castle an artillery fortress and the historic Pendennis Castle, built by Henry VIII. The acclaimed National Maritime Museum, just 15 minutes’ walk, will immerse you in the colourful history of Falmouth and beyond. Both Tudor Castles of Pendennis and St Mawes are governed and maintained by the English Heritage, giving budding historians plenty to explore and immerse yourself in.

A vibrant food scene, along with an abundance of calendar events throughout the year, make Falmouth a top cultural destination, as well as a wonderfully scenic one. From the International Sea Shanty Festival to the renowned restaurants, bars and cafés, there are adventures to be found in every sense and direction. Falmouth’s Oyster Festival, Beer Festival and Falmouth week are also not to be missed.

Getting Around:
Getting around Falmouth is quick and easy, everything is within a comfortable walking distance, just follow the road down as we are at the top of the high street.

The high street has everything to offer; gourmet dining experiences in gastropubs such as Star and Garter which boasts amazing sea views and is rated 4.5 with nearly 500 reviews, we’d recommend a visit, especially as it’s only a minute away! Falmouth has an abundance of bakeries, with the best reviewed bakery in Falmouth just down the road (Stones Bakery) I would recommend trying to go earlier in the day to get the best pick of the treats they sell. There is so much to see and do, with several independent art shops and a pottery workshop also just seconds away down the hill, as well as tours and equipment hire being readily available giving you plenty of options depending on what you want to do!

We are very lucky in Falmouth to have an abundance of fantastic Food and Drink so it’s hard not to just recommend everything. However, here are some personal favourites:

Restaurant Four (French) Great Shakes (Milkshakes)
Thai Orchid (Thai) Rising Dragon (Chinese)
Amanzi (South African) Oggies (Bakery + Coffee)
Kona’s (Hawaii Style Tapas). Habour Lights (Fish and Chips)
Boo Koos (Burgers) Chic Pea (Falafel, Hot boxes, Wraps)
Pho bar (Vietnamese) Pizza on the corner (Kebabs, Pizza, Chips)
The Shack (Seafood) Haberneros (Burritos)

There is a local bus shuttle service in and out of town as well as a general bus service to the surrounding area if you’d like to explore all of Cornwall. Falmouth also offers a convenient ferry service to neighbouring towns along with sightseeing tours and ferry taxi, all of which can be accessed via the pier just down the hill.

if you need a supermarket there is a Spar and a Tesco’s a two-minute walk away, just follow the road down. Spar is open late 7 days a week which comes in very handy!

Gyllyngvase (Gylly) Beach is a lovely Green Flag sandy beach a 20-minute walk from the property, there are also a lot of beaches and coves within a short driving distance/ferry taxi. At Gylly beach there are paddle board/kayak rental services as well as shops selling beach products and several food and drink options on the beach itself. Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle along with a multitude of incredible walks and scenery along the Southwest Costal Path are around the Gylly Beach area.
