The town's history dates back to 681, but its heyday as a major market for Cotswold wool was in the Middle Ages. There is still a weekly general market in the Market Hall, and the town as a whole is a mecca for antique hunters, with numerous shops and regular fairs in the area. Forestry Commission's Westonbirt Arboretum, Europe's largest collection of rare plants, is just a short drive away, while the Regency cities of Bath and Cheltenham, Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, and the internationally renowned Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust are all within easy driving distance of the property.
