Middleton-by-Wirksworth is a delightful village. A former quarry and lead mining village, it nestles quietly on a prominent hillside above the nearby towns of Wirksworth and Matlock as well as the village of Cromford which is a world heritage site only 5 minutes away. The village is centred on a long main street which consists of two good pubs, one with a great food menu and the other a social drinking pub, both within walking distance, before eventually winding its way down into nearby Wirksworth with a selection of shops, restaurants, heritage center and other amenities. The village was the Gold award and Village category winner for the ‘East Midlands Village in Bloom’ award in 2019, and was also nominated for the Britain in Bloom award in the same year. The surrounding countryside is a walkers’ and cyclists’ paradise, with the disused High Peak railway line running through the village, now converted into The High Peak Cycle Trail and providing a fun day out for all.
Matlock is only 10 minutes away providing a good range of shops and pubs, whilst the many National Trust properties and museums throughout the area are not to be missed. The popular spa town of Matlock is certainly worth visiting whilst you’re here; it features stunning buildings and a good selection of shops. The neighbouring Matlock Bath is 5 minutes away and is a good place to go, with The Heights of Abraham being within easy reach, providing a fantastic way to indulge in the incredible views of the area.
Why not venture a little further and visit the famous market town of Bakewell home of the world-renowned pudding just 20 minutes away. It offers a wonderful choice of shops and eateries, and a traditional market every Monday. A short drive or walk takes you to Carsington Water where there is an abundance of water sports available both through courses and hire, as well as bicycle hire and boat fishing available with a lovely 9 mile walk around. A must for anyone visiting the area is to visit Cromford, which is a key part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and home to the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill, which revolutionised the factory system, making the most of the Industrial Revolution. Also within easy reach are the majestic Chatsworth House and the much praised Haddon Hall, both well worth a visit. The Miners Rest is a delightful cottage which offers guests a real treat in a fantastic location at any time of the year. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
