The photos do not do justice to how beautiful this place is, and we were surprised at just how much space there is, both inside and out, with extensive gardens, multiple outdoor seating areas, a swimming pool and sunbathing area, as well as a large wooded area and vineyard. Although sometimes booked as a guesthouse or B&B, when you book through here, you get the whole place to yourself. The house is full of history, beautiful furniture and interesting artifacts. There is also a full kitchen (not pictured) which is really well equipped and so it is easy to cook meals. There is at least one restaurant within walking distance, and there are many others within a very short drive, as well as supermarkets, pharmacies, takeaways, bakeries, etc. It is also very well positioned for day trips to Verona (30 mins drive) and Lake Garda (Sirmione is less than an hour away). The welcome we received was incredible – the house is owned by three sisters, two of whom live in the houses next door, and are extremely friendly, but also give you your privacy. They facilitated both a very late arrival (almost midnight) and a late checkout. Nothing was too much trouble, and the hosts would occasionally call over for a quick chat and make sure we were enjoying the stay and had everything we needed. Alberto, who manages the bookings, was also very responsive to messages and was always willing to help. It is worth being aware that mosquitos can be a bit of an issue – this is true for all of this part of Italy, not just here, so don’t let it put you off, but it is good to be well prepared. We were not, and received a lot of bites during the first couple of days. However, with good preparation, we reduced it to a minimal problem. Our hosts very kindly provided us with repellent (DEET), burners, candles, sprays and plugins, with more available from the local shop and pharmacy. I would advise you to bring some antihistamines and other bite treatments for when you get bitten, as we found these things to be much more expensive to buy locally than they are in the UK. Also, be aware that tiger mosquitos are active all day, not just at dusk, so you need to take precautions all day. I would recommend keeping the upstairs windows closed, as there are no mosquito screens on these. However, this is only one very minor downside, to a wonderful place, so don’t let it put you off. Overall, it was a wonderful stay and I can not recommend La Rose e Il Leone highly enough!
